Welcome to the Hamilton County, Illinois Genealogy web site. This site was established as a part of the Illinois GenWeb Project which is a part of the USGenWeb Project.
Hamilton County was created on February 8, 1821 from the western part of White County. The county seat is in McLeansboro, IL. The area of the present Hamilton County was part of White County from 1815 to 1821. From 1812 to 1815, it was part of Gallatin County. And before 1812, it was part of Randolph County. See the Illinois County Boundaries 1790-Present web site for maps showing county boundary changes.
My name is Michael L. Hébert and I took over this site from Ray Henderson who got the site off the ground in the early days of USGenWeb. I have been interested in Hamilton County genealogical research for many years. My mother, Rebecca J. Woodruff Rollefson, was born and raised in Hamilton County. I have lots of roots there going back to pre-statehood days ... however, mom herself doesn't go back quite that far! :-) If you need some information out of any of the Hamilton County reference books, please contact one of the lookup volunteers. Please contact me if you own or have access to any Hamilton County reference books and would like to volunteer for lookups.
Below are the links to the Hamilton County information pages and links to other web sites. Feel free to submit your Hamilton County surnames, queries, and any other historical material. Happy hunting!!
